As a nod to the fruit they’re inspired by, these chewy sourdough products are brushed with red food coloring diluted in water and decorated with a cinnamon stick, reminiscent of the stem. The preparation is quick, and 60 minutes of rising is enough to have buns ready to be steamed for 10 minutes. Enjoy them as a snack with a steaming cup of tea: they will be irresistible.

How to make apple shaped steamed buns

In a bowl, mix the milk with the seed oil, sugar and brewer’s yeast. Add the flour, salt and knead with your hands. Form a compact ball, cover it with a tea towel and leave to rise for 1 hour. Work the dough a little more with the flour, then divide it into 5 balls. Place a ball on a square of parchment paper, make a small groove in the center and place a cinnamon stick. Dilute the food coloring in the water and brush it on the bread. Repeat for other apple-shaped sandwiches. Steam them for 10 minutes – your apple-shaped steamed buns are ready to serve.
