Austin, Texas has the 11th largest population of any city in the United States. Located in central East Texas, it benefits from both a vibrant downtown scene and a wealth of nearby outdoor activities. Home to the University of Texas at Austin and an incredible variety of live music, Austin is definitely worth a visit. But how friendly is it to your furry, feathered, and scaly pets? Here we discover some of the best pet-friendly events in Austin.

1. Mighty Texas Dog Walk

The Mighty Texas Dog Walk offers a 1 mile walk through Camp Mabry.

Known as the biggest dog day of the year in Austin, this annual event has been running for 22 years (as of 2022). The Mighty Texas Dog Walk takes place at Camp Mabry in November and is organized by Service Dogs Inc. The highlight of the day? A 1 mile walk through Camp Mabry Parade Grounds along with thousands of other service dog owners, trainers, vets and enthusiasts! If you live in the Austin area and have a furry companion or two, this is an event not to be missed!

Many racers come dressed up – dogs included! This event has won several Guinness World Records, including Biggest Cake for Dogs, Biggest Fur Ball and Most Dogs Run. But the coolest part of the Mighty Texas Dog Walk might be who it benefits. All proceeds from this event will go to Service Dogs Inc., an organization that provides free service dogs to Texas residents.

feeling perky? Well, you might just want to check out one of Austin’s cheesiest pet-friendly events, the 2022 Catio Tour. This event, the first of its kind, will be held in November 2022 and will consist of a tour of some of Austin’s best ‘Catios’. In case you don’t know, a catio is a patio designed for indoor cats. They are usually enclosed and have beds, toys, and viewing areas.

This event is hosted by Travis Audobon, an organization dedicated to wildlife conservation. Designed as a self-guided tour, the 2022 Catio Tour showcases some of the best Catios in all of Austin. Catios protect cats from predators (like coyotes and dogs) while ensuring your cat can’t harm native wildlife (like mice and birds). If you’ve always been curious about Catios or even thought about building your own, this is the event for you!

Organized by the YWCA of Greater Austin, this event takes place at Austin Pets Alive in November. Join other pet owners and their furry friends to unveil the Dia de Los Muertos Community Mural Project. Special prizes and freebies for your pet are included!

The Community Mural Project is a community celebration focused on amplifying and honoring the voices of women and women of color. It offers a community resource fair, as well as pet-friendly activities and family activities. 4. Hounds and Heroes 5k and Family Festival Race

Want to run or walk 5km with your canine buddy? Look no further than this pet-friendly event in Austin. The Hounds and Heroes 5k and Family Festival Race takes place in April and benefits the Hounds for Heroes organization, which provides service dogs to veterans in need. They also provide Bow Wow reading dogs to local libraries for children with reading difficulties. This event also features dog training experts, food trucks, vendors and more!

The Hounds and Heroes 5k ends with a family celebration for runners and their families. This is where puppy parents can meet with service dog trainers as well as professional dog trainers to get some great tips on keeping their dogs happy and healthy.

5. Austin Doga

Have you ever tried doing yoga at home just to let your dog join in? Well, at Austin Doga you really can do yoga with your dog! During doga, you’ll be doing your traditional yoga stretches and meditations, and your dog can be in a cool, relaxing environment. It may sound strange, but dog owners swear by it!

Austin Doga has been teaching dog parents to meditate and practice mindfulness with their dogs since 2011. Although the dogs don’t actually do yoga poses, the practice is reportedly incredible for strengthening the bond between dogs and their owners. Austin Doga offers both individual and group classes.
