Sweet pretzel: the recipe for the sweet variant of a traditional German classic

I sweet pretzels they are gods soft sourdough products and delicious, a variant of the pretzel, the typical bread of the German gastronomy. In this preparation the dough will be made with flour, milk, brewer’s yeast, sugar, a pinch of salt, butter and vanilla. After step leavenjust shape the dough balls into the classic pretzel shape and bake them in the oven for about 20 minutes. Once ready, they will be very sweet and fragrant, ready to be tasted for the breakfast where to snack with a cup of milk or hot chocolate, simply dipped in sugar. Here are the steps to make them.

How to make sweet pretzels

In a large bowl mix the milk, fresh brewer’s yeast and sugar 1.

Add the flour, a pinch of salt, the melted butter and the vanilla extract 2.

Knead to obtain a smooth and compact dough 3.

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size 4.

Divide the dough into 6 equal parts and form balls 5.

Roll and stretch each ball and braid them to form pretzels 6.

Transfer them to the baking sheet 7cover them with a tea towel and let rise for 20 minutes.

Brush the milk over the pretzels 8 and bake them in a static oven at 180°C for 20 minutes.

Moisten the bread with melted butter and roll the top in the sugar 9.

Sweet pretzels are ready to eat ten


You can enrich the surface of the sweet pretzels with the grains of sugar, to be added before baking. In this case, therefore, we will not put the pretzels in the sugar after cooking.


You can store sugary pretzels for 1-2 days inside a hermetically sealed paper bag for food.
